SUMMARY:Read Together Tutor Training
DESCRIPTION:Train to become a volunteer tutor in our Read Together program working with students ages 6-14. No prior tutoring or teaching experience is necessary. If you or someone you know can give two hours a week to help a child read better\, you can truly make a difference in your community. Pre-registration and participation in all three days of the training is required. Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 years old and make an initial commitment to tutor twice a week for 12 months (with occasional breaks for vacations or holidays). Once a new volunteer completes the three-day training led by our Program Director\, they are then matched with a child from the local community. \nThe training will occur: \n\nSeptember 28\, 2026 from 9am to 1pm\nSeptember 30\, 2026 from 9am to 1pm\nOctober 2\, 2026 from 9am to 1pm\nParticipation in all three days of the training is required.\n\nFor more information or to sign-up for the Fall Read Together tutor training\, contact Katie at PD@midcoastlit.org

SUMMARY:Reader's Theater
DESCRIPTION:Midcoast Literacy’s fall Readers Theater event on October 24th features an afternoon performance of four children’s stories and activities for the whole family.\nJoin us on Saturday\, October 24\, at Morse High School Auditorium (826 Shipbuilder Drive\, Bath) for a live afternoon performance of Mercy Watson to the Rescue\, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse\, Bears Don’t Share! and It’s Raining Bats and Frogs\, all starring local actors. Before the show starting at 1:00 PM and at intermission we will have face painting and craft activities inspired by the books. \nReaders Theater is a style of live performance that blends the reading aloud of a book with theatrical elements. In Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo\, porcine wonder Mercy Watson creates havoc in the neighborhood when her decision to snuggle in the Watsons’ bed causes trouble and the fire department is called. In Bears Don’t Share! by Lorna Scobie\, with winter on the way\, Squirrel and his friend Bear are on the hunt for some food. There’s just one problem… bears don’t share! In Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes\, Lilly loves school and her favorite teacher\, Mr. Slinger\, until her new favorite musical purse distracts the class and has to be taken away. And in It’s Raining Bats & Frogs by Rebecca Colby\, what’s Delia the witch to do when a rainstorm threatens the annual Halloween Parade? Grab her magic wand and make it fun! But watch out for unintended consequences… \nTickets for Readers Theater are $10 per person or $35 for a family (4-8 people)\, and can be purchased below. \nNo paper tickets or e-tickets will be issued. You will receive a purchase confirmation and your name will be added to our will-call list for check-in on the evening of the event. All proceeds will support Midcoast Literacy’s free literacy programs for people of all ages.
