Mission Statement
Improving lives through literacy.
History
Midcoast Literacy is a non-profit organization based in Bath, Maine that has been providing free literacy programs to people of all ages in Lincoln, Sagadahoc and northern Cumberland Counties for more than 50 years. Through a wide range of Family Literacy and Adult Literacy programs, we strive to help children and adults develop their literacy skills, so they may become competent, healthy, caring individuals who succeed through all stages of life.
Midcoast Literacy has been serving individuals in the mid coast region of Maine under a variety of names since we were founded in 1970 as “Literacy Volunteers of Bath.” In 2003, a merger with two other local literacy organizations led to incorporation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit named “Tri-County Literacy” and the expansion of our programming to include both adult and family literacy services. The current name, Midcoast Literacy, was adopted in 2018.
Programs
Our programs provide free, individualized tutoring for adults and school-age children; workplace literacy group classes for English language learners employed at local businesses; family literacy sessions for preschool and Pre-K families; and free children’s books for low-income families. We engage the help of approximately 100 volunteer tutors to deliver our services to those in need. We collaborate with numerous partners in our region, including Midcoast Maine Community Action Head Start and Early Head Start, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, Midcoast New Mainers Support Group, local libraries, adult education centers, career centers, regional YMCAs, local PTA/Os, local employers, the Brunswick Welcome Center, and more to make a true difference in the lives of those we serve.
