Success Story: Read With Me 2023-24

This month, for our April Success Story (also featured in our e-mail newsletter), we celebrate the revitalization of our Read With Me early literacy sessions in Midcoast Maine Community Action (MMCA) Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms.

We are back to serving 13 classrooms this school year, the most since 2019, and are looking forward to the opening of more classrooms in Lincoln County by next fall. Most encouragingly, parents are also increasing their participation in our sessions, helping to make our program a family affair once again. At a recent April session in Bath, we had eight parents/caregivers join their children for the reading of Fox Explores the Night, followed by a great art project with glue and googly eyes! More parents, who arrived a bit early to pick up their children, ended up joining in the activities as well. Jessica, a Bath parent, said she attends every session that she can when she is not working. She went on to say that she and her daughter love Read With Me, because “we make reading exciting for all children” and that her daughter “loves the books so much she ends up falling asleep with them in her bed.” This is what we love to hear as we aim to keep increasing parent/caregiver engagement by finding ways to make it easier for parents and other family members to join the children for Read With Me sessions.
