Midcoast Literacy will hold a Special Tutoring Orientation September 12th for current and new tutors interested in working with asylum seekers.
The recent arrival of new asylum seekers in Brunswick and Bath - primarily from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo - has created an increased need for English Language Learner (ELL) tutoring in our area. Are you interested in finding out more about becoming an English Language tutor for an asylum seeker in Bath and Brunswick? Any current or prospective volunteers who'd like to learn more are invited to attend a Special Tutoring Orientation with the Brunswick and Bath Cultural Brokers on September 12th during the daytime.
The orientation is for anyone interested in becoming an ELL tutor: no prior tutoring experience is required. At the orientation, you will learn about the language learning needs of newly arrived immigrants and becoming a tutor for them with Midcoast Literacy. The orientation is for both those interested in working with adult learners, and for those who are interested in working with children of asylum seekers.
At the orientation, there will be:
Presentations by the Cultural Brokers for the cities of Brunswick and Bath who are working with the asylum seekers: Maurice Namwira (Bath) and Nsiona Nguizani (Brunswick).
A Q&A session with MCL Executive Director Don Lader and the two Cultural Brokers to answer your questions about ELL tutoring with asylum seekers.
Information on how to access free online training to become a tutor or update your ELL tutoring skills.
Opportunity to register as a new tutor with Midcoast Literacy at the event and get started right away on becoming a tutor for an asylum seeker.
