Read Together tutoring session

“The COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on school schedules and family responsibilities keeps increasing the need for our tutors,” says Katie Clark, Read Together Program Director. "We have children waiting now to be matched with trained tutors!”

Tutors are needed for children ages 6-14 who are struggling to read at grade level and for children from asylum seeking families who are learning to speak, read, and write in English. We have two upcoming trainings for new volunteers: in Bath on March 29, 31, and April 2, from 12:00-4:00pm each day (at Midcoast Literacy's offices in Bath) and in Richmond April 7, 9, and 12, from 12:00-4:00pm each day (at D R U M Church in Bath). The trainings will be limited to small groups of participants to allow for distancing and proper COVID safety.

During the pandemic, some tutoring sessions for children have been taking place remotely via Zoom and other platforms. Many of our Read Together tutors also work with learners in-person, either outdoors or in indoor locations that allow for appropriate distancing and protection measures.

Tutors for Read Together must be at least 18 years old; participate in the training for volunteer tutors; and be able to make a minimum one-year commitment. Under the current health conditions, tutors must also be willing and able to tutor using PPE during in-person sessions. This spring's trainings will be held in person and be limited to a maximum of 4 participants in Bath and 5 participants in Richmond. You can read more about becoming at tutor at:
