Volunteer Training for Read Together starts January 16th

Would you or someone you know like to help a child become a better reader? A three-day tutor training will be held starting January 16th for Midcoast Literacy’s Read Together tutoring program for children ages 6-14.

“In 2022, we tutored 49 children! It takes a lot of tutors to keep up with those requests for help, especially in the Bath/Brunswick area," says Katie Clark, Midcoast Literacy Program Director. "If you have the time, building a supportive relationship with a child around books and the pathway to literacy is a truly rewarding experience.”

Tutors are needed to work with children ages 6-14 who are struggling to read at grade level and for children from asylum seeking families who are learning to speak, read, and write in English. Training for new volunteers will be held on January 16, 18, and 20, from 9:00am-1:00pm each day at Midcoast Literacy's offices (9 Park Street; Bath, ME). Participants must attend all three days to complete the training.

Tutors for Read Together must be at least 18 years old; participate in the training for volunteer tutors; and be able to make a minimum one-year commitment. Volunteers are expected to meet twice a week for an hour, year-round with their students for a minimum of 12 months. The tutor training will be held in-person, and all new Read Together tutoring sessions are taking place in-person at this time.
