Midcoast Literacy’s Annual Celebration on June 27 marked our 49th year providing free literacy services in Maine’s mid coast region.
The annual event brought together tutors, students, families, staff, and supporters to celebrate the work MCL does in the community and to recognize exceptional tutors and learners for their achievements during the 2018-19 school year.
Volunteers and board members Newton Blakesley and Cyndy Lewis of Westport Island were recognized with a special award for their combined 29 years of exemplary volunteer service to the organization. Both Blakesley and Lewis served as volunteer tutors for clients from Elmhurst in Bath, assumed a variety or roles on the board of directors, and have worked tirelessly to support Midcoast Literacy’s mission: improving lives through literacy. A new annual award for Midcoast Literacy, Outstanding Tutor of the Year, that was created and named in Newt and Cyndy’s honor was also announced at the event. Livy Glaubitz of Phippsburg was the first recipient of the award in recognition of her participation as a dedicated and extremely effective tutor of children in the Read Together program.
In addition to honoring tutors, two students in the Read Together program were honored for their achievements. Cleora Tarbox of Woolwich and Yalnerol Malove of Brunswick received the Outstanding Participation awards for the year.
