Orientation January 9th for online volunteer sign-ups

Midcoast Literacy will hold open orientation Thursday, January 9th, for their new online sign-up system for volunteers to assist asylum seekers with transportation, childcare, and more.

Nsiona for Drop in Orientation web

Over the past 6 weeks Midcoast Literacy has also been working to develop an online system that will centralize volunteering to assist asylum seekers in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath area with needs such as transportation or childcare. The new online sign-up system is live on our Volunteer page now. This Thursday, January 9th, we’re holding a drop-in orientation session throughout the day to show interested volunteers how the system works and help them to register.

Drop-in orientation for the new system will be held at the Midcoast Literacy offices (34 Wing Farm Parkway in Bath) all day on Thursday (1/9), so you can stop by anytime from 9:00am to 3:45pm to preview the new online system with our staff. This drop-in orientation is available for anyone who is interested in volunteering to provide support for local asylum seekers apart from language tutoring. Through the new online system, individuals can:

• Sign-up to be a volunteer driver, using your personal vehicle to assist asylum seekers with transportation locally in Brunswick/Topsham/Bath or for longer trips to Portland or Boston.
• Sign-up to be a volunteer childcare provider, helping care for the children of asylum seekers during Adult Education English language classes or individual Midcoast Literacy tutoring sessions.
• Sign-up to be part of a family support team, assisting one family of asylum seekers in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath area.
• Enter or update your hours of availability for any of the above volunteer positions from week to week.

If you’re interested in volunteering to provide support for new Mainers in any of these ways, please stop by on Thursday for the orientation to learn about the new online volunteer sign-up system. MCL Executive Director Don Lader will be available to show the system to individuals or small groups throughout the day from 9:00am to 3:45pm. There's no need to RSVP in advance – just come for a short orientation whenever you can.
