Read Together

One-on-one tutoring for students, ages 6-14, who are reading below grade level

Read Together students meet for one hour twice a week, year-round, with their tutors.

The students get help with:

  • Reading, vocabulary, and comprehension
  • Writing, spelling, and penmanship
  • English language fluency
  • Math and other subjects

They also gain self-confidence, improve their perception of themselves as readers, and build strong relationships with their tutors.

โ€œAs a parent, Iโ€™ve observed some major leaps with my son. He is more confident with schoolwork in general. He doesnโ€™t shy away from writing, even knowing that his words are misspelled. His new reading skills have really blown me away! I am so proud of him.โ€

Read Together Program Details

Each Read Together student is paired with a tutor. The student and tutor meet for an hour, twice a week after school and during the summer (short vacations are taken throughout the year). Sessions are held at public places such as libraries. The tutor designs the sessions based on the studentโ€™s strengths, interests, needs, and learning style. Midcoast Literacy has a lending library filled with a wide variety of books, educational games, and other materials that tutors can use during their sessions. The activities and lessons in sessions are mainly separate from school assignments. However, sometimes a tutor might help a student with a special school project that needs to be finished at home. Most students enter Read Together reading at least two years below grade level and remain in the program for 2 to 3 years to achieve and maintain significant gains.

Read Together helps 65-70 students per year
