Workplace Literacy

On-site English language classes for employees who are English language learners

Workplace Literacy provides on-site, small-group English language classes led by trained volunteers, who focus instruction on job-specific language, topics, and skills.

The Host businessesโ€™ services include:

  • housekeeping
  • retail
  • food service
  • food preparation and cooking
  • warehouse work
  • manufacturing

Businesses hold the weekly English classes on site and during work hours to encourage participation and emphasize the value of the classes for both employee and employer.

โ€œI am so busy with work and family that I have no time for Adult Education classes. This class [at my job] works with my schedule. Now I can do so much in English and help others too.โ€

Workplace Literacy Program Details

Hour-long workplace literacy classes are held at host businesses once or twice a week, depending on employer preference. They are scheduled to enable participants to attend at the beginning or end of their work shifts. Employers, managers, employee participants, and class leaders influence the content of the classes. Employers pay employees for class time to encourage participation and to emphasize the value of improved English language skills. Workplace Literacy participants are also encouraged to sign up for our English Language one-on-one tutoring program to improve their skills more quickly.

Midcoast Literacy currently holds Workplace Literacy classes at Bowdoin College, Coastal Landing Assisted Living, El Rodeo Restaurant, Wal-Mart, Wild Oats Bakery, and L.L. Bean fulfillment and manufacturing locations.

In 2024, Workplace Literacy classes served 42 employees at 7 local host businesses.
