This monthโs Success Story celebrates Read Together tutor Steve OโKeefe and his student, Eason, who have been working together since November 2023.
It has been two years of remarkable growth for Eason. Moving from China one month before starting 8th grade, speaking no English, and being shy by nature did not make Easonโs transition to living in Brunswick easy. Having two younger siblings who picked up English quickly only made Easonโs initial slow progress more pronounced.
However, with time, the consistent support from Steve, and an internal drive to succeed, Eason has blossomed. Now in 10th grade, Eason wrote the following about his tutoring experience: โTutoring greatly improved my English skills, including reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. It helped prepare me for high school classes and communicate more effectively at work.โ Steve concurred, adding his own reflections on Easonโs achievements: โEason is very intelligent and a quick learner with a strong work ethic. He has taken driving lessons and is a few miles short of getting his license. He found a job within walking distance of his home and works three days each week. Eason has strong family support and encouragement, but his success is his own. He is a pleasure to teach. I predict that Eason will be fully ready for college when he graduates in 2028.โ Easonโs mom, Anna, is also proud of her son and wrote the following to Steve after he shared one of Easonโs well-written essays with her: โI am truly grateful for everything you have done for Eason. His progress would not be possible without your patience, dedication, and encouragement. We are lucky to have you as his tutor.โ
With all these successes, you might get the impression that Eason and Steveโs time together is all work and no play, but never fearยญยญยญ. When asked to identify the best thing he has done with Steve so far, Eason said, โGet ice cream.โ It could be time for another trip to Gelato Fiasco to celebrate!
