Read With Me Site Instructor: Lincoln County

Salary:                     $19.25 per hour

Hours:                     10-14 hours per month during the school year (Aug-May)

Reports to:           Read With Me Program Coordinator

Start Date:            August 17, 2026

Position Overview:  The Read With Me Site instructor leads Read With Me sessions, which include story and activity time, at participating Head Start Centers: modeling effective read-aloud techniques, engaging children and adults in literacy-building discussions and projects, and distributing free books and materials to every family.

Program Description: Read With Me promotes the development of young children’s early literacy skills by encouraging and supporting family read-aloud routines, so children enter kindergarten with the foundation necessary for learning to read. Read With Me provides monthly family early-literacy sessions for children in area Head Start programs and Early Head Start programs; invites parents to join all in-class sessions; gives free books to every child at every session; and distributes handouts and materials to every family to encourage more literacy-building activities at home.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Meet as requested with the Program Coordinator to prepare monthly RWM sessions

·         Make brief presentations about Read With Me to potential participants at Fall Head Start orientations if requested

·         Prepare for each session by reviewing the featured books and handouts provided by the Program Coordinator and developing activities to complement the session’s featured books if not provided by the Program Coordinator

·         Organize the books and activity materials for each session and transport them to each site

·         Send reminder texts to participating families before each session

·         Post flyers at the centers about upcoming sessions

·         Lead Read With Me sessions: read aloud the featured book to students, parents, and teachers, and facilitate the activity that follows story time

·         Impart information about early literacy development and good literacy-building habits as part of every session

·         Distribute free books and handouts

·         Maintain attendance records for all sessions

·         Record and update participant contact information

·         Maintain confidentiality for site staff and participants

·         Maintain good communication with staff at all sites

·         Record pertinent observations, participant reflections, and other information about the program that might be used for evaluation, fundraising, and/or program promotion

·         Administer participant surveys developed by the Program Coordinator as requested 

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:

·         Associate’s degree or higher in a related field (preferred) and three years of  related experience

·         Knowledge of literacy development and early childhood development

·         Knowledge of children’s literature for children ages 0-5

·         Familiarity with activities, crafts, and projects appropriate for children ages 1-5

·         Ability to work independently, lead groups of young children and adults, and engage them in group discussions and activities

·         Ability to manage a schedule, problem-solve, and communicate expectations and directions in a positive, professional manner

·         Ability to interact effectively with the Program Coordinator and all program participants

·         Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

·         Ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 25 pounds
