September's Success Story highlights tutor Dan Harris and English language learner Chico.
Kyle and book boys squareThe two have worked together for 18 months. Chico, a phlebotomist in Angola, is currently employed at Wild Oats. He knew no English when he arrived here, but thanks to weekly tutoring with Dan he now can converse quite fluently. Dan, who began by tutoring Chico's wife Lovely as well, has encouraged them to speak English at home. Their sessions combine lively conversation with grammar, pronunciation and lessons in American history and culture.
Dan has also learned about life in Angola, and the challenges immigrants face here. He says, "the friendship that has developed between Chico and me has confirmed my generally optimistic view of the inherently good nature of most of our species, and certainly has strengthened my own view of the USA as a place that welcomes and benefits from the new arrivals, wherever they come from." Chico adds, "The level of my English conversation improved. My pronunciation has improved. Our meetings helped me in my work. I was promoted to Supervisor in April. I help other people at Wild Oats speak English. I am growing more comfortable in America."
Congratulations to Dan and Chico whose work together has certainly benefited them both, and keep following us for more success stories from our tutors throughout the year!
